In the last month I have had the pleasure of visiting the vegetarian Super Natural Cafe in Newcastle twice. This is a very friendly, cosy cafe near Central station, run by a team of lovely people. I have walked past this place many times but to be honest haven’t been that enticed as the exterior makes it look a bit dark and eery. However, thanks to my Tastecard subscription, which offers 2 for 1 on mains in many chain and a few local restaurants for £30 a year, I decided to try it out.

As it is quite a low-key spot, I didn’t have much expectation and went with an open mind. However, we were very pleasantly surprised both times and I would happily go back many times to try their extensive menu. Even without the deal, the food is very good value - perfect for a quick and affordable lunch in the centre.

My first meal was an ideal choice for me: a vegan sharing platter (for one). This platter was loaded with a big selection of delicious vegan dips, some which I had never tried the vegan versions of, such as raita and their house humous was delicious. There was also homemade bhajis and samosas, as well as crusty tomato focaccia and a salad of the day. Quite a fusion of cuisines, but I love variety and they all went together very well! My friend got the vegan lasagna, which was an almighty portion, served with a side salad and their focaccia. I had a taste of this, and I have to say it was not as good as my meal, but then again I am very particular about vegan cheese, so I am sure this would have satisfied most vegans. My friend loved it, commenting that it was the perfect creamy, comfort meal. She definitely struggled to finish it though!

On our second run, I was tempted to order the platter again as it was so good but forced myself to branch out as I was convinced that I would equally enjoy most things on their menu. So I opted for the salad, as it was roast squash and quinoa, which is a loved combination of mine, and I was promised it was nice and substantial. I ordered this with a side of their humous as I had to have it again. The salad was beautifully presented, with an excess of garnish and drizzle. It certainly resembled fine dining rather than cafe food, which made me happy as I am of the opinion that presentation vastly changes one’s dining experience. I was yummy as well, although maybe not quite as impressive as the platter. My friend ordered the Big Melt burger this time, which was oozing with cheesy sauce and served with crispy baked potato wedges and vegan mayo. She said she particularly loved the taste of the chutney blended in with the cheese, which created a nice contrast of sharp, sweet and gooey, which melted into the rustic white bun. What I particularly love about this cafe is their array of sides that are included with each meal. Most options come with a side salad, homemade coleslaw and tortilla chips.

Sadly, we were too full for dessert but Super Natural is definitely worth going back to just for their incredible selection of decadent vegan cakes and milkshakes.

All in all, this is the perfect place for vegan comfort food, that exceeds the categorisation of ‘Junk Food’, as they clearly make a conscious effort to use fresh, wholesome ingredients. Moreover, you are certain to get something very worthy of your money.

Vegan platter: £6.75/Lasagna: £8.99/Salad of the Day, with humous: £7.99/The Big Melt: £7.99
