Papa Ganoush, Newcastle

One of the best additions to Jesmond in the past two years that I have lived there has been the new Papa Ganoush cafe. Being familiar with their food stall, which is present at most markets and fairs in Newcastle and following their Instagram, I quickly became a regular at this delightful little spot. There was certainly a lack of cheap, healthy options for a quick lunch stop down our end, so it was vastly welcomed.
The cafe started by offering a wonderful deal of four salads, with a protein (be it freshly made falafel, spiced chicken or fish, halloumi or a vegetarian frittata) and a generous dollop of the creamiest humous you ever did taste, all for £5.95. Being rather bored of falafel, the vegan-cliché, I made the most of the salads - which are undoubtedly the most tasty, interesting and vibrant salads you can sample in Newcastle - by having extra salads with no protein and lots of humous or dahl. They also serve their boxes with a fresh, heated flatbread - which were so delicious you could happily eat it on its own or as a method of scooping up all the delicious, colourful dishes and dips and cramming it into your mouth.
Sadly, as is so usual, with the increase of popularity, the prices were raised significantly and you now get the same plate/box for a minimum of £7.95, which is significantly more expensive, especially for your average student who daren’t spend a penny over £5 for their lunch. Yet, I still treated myself to one last lunch at Papa Ganoush on my last sorrowful days of living on Osborne Avenue and it was certainly worth it. I will miss this little joint perhaps the most out of all my go-to cafes in the toon and I wish them the best for the future. I will obviously be back and I hope not before too long!
