Bush Hall Dining Rooms

The other day I was supposed to be meeting my friend for dinner. It was quite last minute planning and we needed to find somewhere in the Notting Hill area. This was harder than expected. There are fewer good restaurants than you think in Notting Hill, and those that are are usually scarily expensive. However, I had previously seen Bush Hall Dining Rooms being mentioned on a few foodie blogs, and being particularly in the spotlight for its moderate prices.

It was a bit of a trek, and on a very random, and unconventional street. The actual restaurant stood out amongst the rather dingy-looking shops and restaurants that surrounded it, however, with handwritten menus and a soft, wood interior. It was quite dark inside and there were no other customers all evening, which was a bit odd, but we assumed it must have more of a buzz on the weekend.

I was a bit apprehensive, but this quickly changed when we saw the menu. It was filled with many mouthwatering and unique dishes, both native and exotic: tiger prawn salad, fresh linguine with chorizo ragu, swordfish, artichoke risotto, with plenty of good vegetarian and vegan options. We were even more impressed when the food arrived. I had the swordfish which was placed on a bed of grilled peaches, greens, candied pecans and dotted with wild garlic aioli. It was meaty, tangy, sweet, crunchy and creamy all at the same time. The pecans were a dream, so moreish. The portion size was perfect - not stingy, light but filling. My friend ordered the buttermilk chicken burger, which was served with all the traditional garnishes, chilli lime mayo in a brioche bun. She said it was very good and hearty, but perhaps a bit too spicy. We also both ordered the courgette fries as well. The rare occasions that courgette fries are on the menu, I always order them and with the slight hope that they will be thin rather than fat. These were the fat ones, but were still delicious, and the batter was also crispy but not too heavy or oily. The mayo was homemade as well, which is always a great sign.

All in all I would definitely return to Bush Hall Dining Rooms to sample some of their other amazing specials, but perhaps in the winter as I think the restaurant compliments a cosy, candlelit evening vibe rather than a light, balmy summer’s day. They are also in partnership with Bush Hall music, and offer a 15% discount if you dine with them before going to one of the concerts at Bush Hall, which is a pretty attractive deal!

Swordfish with grilled peaches, asparagus, pecans and wild garlic aioli: £12.50/Buttermilk Chicken Burger: £12.50/Courgette fries: £3
